The world of plate collecting was made possible by many companies in Europe and America who produced a wide variety of limited edition plates. It was started by the Bing and Grondahl and the Royal Copenhagen companies in the late 1800's and these companies are still producing limited edition Christmas and mothers day plates today.
In 1965 they were joined by Frankoma, an American pottery making company from Oklahoma and in 1968 by Porsgrund, a Norweigan Company who also began to make limited edition Christmas plates.
Following the success of these plate companies, a great many other European and American plate manufactures entered the world of collector plates. They made not only Christmas plates but a large number of other kinds of limited edition plates.
